Is test and tag a legal requirement in New Zealand?
Testing and tagging in line with AS/NZS 3760:2022 is a commonly used way for businesses to help manage and demonstrate electrical safety. The main exception is hostile environments like construction and demolition, where AS/NZS 3760 sets a fixed three month interval regardless.
How often should test and tag be done?
It depends on the environment. Construction and demolition sites need testing every three months, factories and workshops every six months, and hospitality, offices and retail every twelve months.
AS/NZS 3760:2022 is the joint Australian and New Zealand standard for the in service inspection and testing of electrical equipment. It sets out testing intervals, what a compliant test involves, and how records should be kept. AS/NZS 3760:2022 provides the recognised framework for in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment in Australia and New Zealand.
Test and tag does not necessarily have to be carried out by a registered electrician. The person performing the inspection and testing must be competent to carry out the required tests, correctly use the testing equipment and interpret the results in accordance with the applicable requirements.
What equipment needs to be tested and tagged?
Test and tag covers any electrical appliance that plugs into a power outlet. That includes power boards, extension cords, vacuum cleaners, hairdryers, printers, kitchen appliances like microwaves, and power tools. Portable and plug-in electrical equipment may require inspection and testing depending on the equipment, how it is used and the environment it operates in.
What happens if an appliance fails a test and tag?
A failed appliance is removed from service immediately and tagged as failed so it can't be used again. The fault is logged and the owner notified. It stays out of service until it's repaired and retested by a qualified person, or replaced.
What are the test and tag requirements for construction sites?
Construction sites need testing every three months under AS/NZS 3760:2022, the shortest interval in the standard, because equipment wears out faster in that environment. RCDs have their own additional checks under AS/NZS 3012:2019, a push button test at the start of each shift plus in service testing every three months.
Colour coding isn't mandatory for most NZ workplaces under AS/NZS 3760:2022, it's optional. It becomes mandatory on construction, demolition and mining sites under AS/NZS 3012, using a fixed colour that rotates by quarter.
